A poor crow, which was near to death with thirst, suddenly saw beneath her a pitcher. Relieved and with great joy she flew nearly down to it. Going near the pitcher, the thirsty crow looked inside the pitcher for water. She saw a little water lying at the bottom of the pitcher. The neck of the pitcher was too narrow for her to reach the water. She tried her best to drink the water but all her efforts became futile. She thought for some time what to do then. By then, she noticed a heap of pebbles nearby. A plan came into her head and accordingly, she began to drop the pebbles into the pitcher one by one. At one time, the level of the water rose high enough to the neck of the pitcher. The poor crow wasting not a single moment drank water to her heart's content and flew away happily.

একটি তৃষ্ণার্ত কাক, যে প্রায় তৃষ্ণায় মরতে বসেছিল, হঠাৎ তার নিচে একটি কলস দেখতে পেল। স্বস্তি ও প্রচণ্ড আনন্দে কাকটি দ্রুত কলসের দিকে উড়ে গেল। কলসের কাছে গিয়ে তৃষ্ণার্ত কাকটি ভেতরে তাকিয়ে দেখল। সে দেখতে পেল যে কলসের তলায় সামান্য পানি আছে। কিন্তু কলসের গলা এত সরু ছিল যে কাকটি পানিতে পৌঁছাতে পারল না। কাকটি পানির কাছে পৌঁছানোর জন্য অনেক চেষ্টা করল, কিন্তু তার সব চেষ্টা ব্যর্থ হলো। এরপর সে কিছুক্ষণ ভেবে দেখল কী করা যায়। তখন তার নজরে পড়ল, কলসের পাশে ছোট ছোট পাথরের একটি ঢিবি রয়েছে। একটি বুদ্ধি তার মাথায় এল। পরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী, কাকটি একটি একটি করে পাথর কলসে ফেলতে শুরু করল। একসময় কলসের পানির স্তর উঠে কলসের গলার কাছে পৌঁছাল। তৃষ্ণার্ত কাক আর সময় নষ্ট না করে তৃপ্তি সহকারে পানি পান করল এবং আনন্দে উড়ে চলে গেল।
