The gold casket represented a suitor who valued material wealth, the silver one symbolized a suitor who showed arrogance and vanity, and the lead casket stood for a man who prioritized inner qualities. (e) Basaanto chose the lead casket thinking that appearances might mislead us often. Bad men hide their inner ugliness under fine clothes to show them good. For this reason, he chose the lead casket. (f) The joyous mood at Belmont turned sad by a piece of news. A messenger came with a letter from Antonio. According to that letter, it seemed that Antonio's life was at stake. (g) Portia saved Antonio's life by using her cleverness to interpret the bond in a way that Shylock could not take the flesh without shedding blood. Portia trapped him within the law. Thus, Portia saved Antonio's life. (h) Shylock was a greedy and vengeful moneylender. In fact, he was very crooked by nature. He had a burning desire for revenge against Antonio.
